Art Workshop - Intuitive Paint & Play
23 November 2025 - 10-3pm
Hutt Art, Lower Hutt
Intuitive Paint & Play
Tap into your intuition and explore the joy of expressive painting in this playful one-day workshop. We’ll begin with a gentle guided meditation and oracle card activity to unlock colours, symbols and emotions waiting to be expressed. From there, we’ll move into vibrant abstract painting, using the elements of art to explore texture, colour, contrast, composition and creative flow

You’ll create a layered abstract piece that speaks from your higher self, with the option, to add a symbolic realism element like a bird, feather, or butterfly. This workshop invites you to let go of perfection, embrace intuitive play, and create something deeply personal and powerful.
What you'll take away...
Each participant will complete one layered abstract painting on canvas, intuitively created and optionally enhanced with symbolic imagery (such as a bird, flower, or personal motif). This will be a resolved artwork, ready to hang or continue building on at home.
What we'll do ...
This workshop is designed to help you connect with your creative flow in a deeply personal and intuitive way. We’ll begin with a short meditation and oracle card reflection to help unlock inspiration - whether through colour, feeling, or visual symbol.

From there, you'll explore the elements of abstract painting using a mixture of acrylics, inks, paint markers, gold leaf, collage, stencils, dry brushing techniques and more. We’ll dive into artistic fundamentals like colour, value, contrast, line, edges, scale, composition and focal point - all through a playful, expressive lens. This is about exploration over perfection, experimentation over outcome.
Once the layered abstract piece is built, students have the option to finish there, or continue by adding a representational element such as a bird, butterfly, bee, feather or symbolic shape. Reference images can be brought in advance, and we’ll use tracing paper for easy image transfer - this is not a drawing class, it’s all about painting.
All levels are welcome, and no drawing skill is required. Expect a nurturing, joy-filled creative space where colour, intuition and artistic play come to life.

"I learnt how to paint an abstract background. It was endearing – I felt a little uncomfortable, but I was happy with my final background for my painting." Sammy
"Hayley’s resources and ideas were helpful for me to understand how to paint an abstract background. She was all about doing it freely and I struggled with that. I now have a painting to work on for my art folio." Avneet
"Hayley gave positive and constructive feedback. The lesson put me outside of my comfort zone. Hayley’s amazing!" Samia
"Hayley was good. Gave positive and helpful advice- very articulate and very knowledgeable. She gave a positive zen. It inspired me to add more abstract marks in my new painting." Joshua
"It was cool to learn about abstracts and composition." Phoebe
"Hayley Lowe taught the lesson in a way that made me learn things." Ngatai
"It was good to have the freedom to do abstract and messy work, because it taught me to let go of control." Emily
"I actually liked it. It was fun just messing around. It was good how she taught us to create layers." Felix
"I really enjoyed it. Everything, it was interesting. She said ‘If you’re happy with something – don’t be, because you can always add more’ I like that." Harrison
"It was cool to have Hayley at school. It was a fresh perspective." Maddie
